Staying Healthy While Working Out: Managing Environmental Risks in Puerto Rico's Fitness Centers

Fitness centers play an important role in supporting physical and mental wellness, but exercising in shared indoor spaces also presents environmental health considerations, particularly in Puerto Rico's warm, humid climate. Zimmetry Environmental, the island's leading indoor environmental quality, infection control, and industrial hygiene consulting firm, is encouraging gym operators and patrons to be aware of these risks and take steps to reduce potential exposures.


High-intensity exercise increases breathing rates, which can elevate the potential for airborne transmission of respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. In Puerto Rico, gyms often rely heavily on air conditioning to manage heat and humidity, making ventilation performance and moisture control especially important to limit the buildup of airborne contaminants and maintain healthy indoor air quality.


Frequently touched surfaces are another concern. Workout machines, free weights, mats, and locker room fixtures can harbor bacteria, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When skin comes into contact with contaminated surfaces, especially through cuts or abrasions, these bacteria can cause painful and sometimes serious infections.


Locker rooms, restrooms, and shower areas also require careful attention. Gastrointestinal bacteria such as Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) can spread through contaminated surfaces and inadequate hand hygiene. In tropical environments, excess moisture can further contribute to microbial persistence if cleaning and drying practices are insufficient.


Warm, wet areas such as showers, steam rooms, and hot tubs present additional challenges. Improperly maintained water systems may allow Legionella bacteria to grow, potentially leading to Legionnaires' disease if contaminated water droplets are inhaled.


Fungal infections are particularly common in humid climates. Athlete's foot, ringworm, and nail fungus thrive on damp floors, in communal showers, and in areas where sweat and moisture are slow to evaporate, conditions frequently found in gyms across the island.
