Growing Adoption Among Periodontists and General Dentists Expands Patient Access to Minimally Invasive Laser Procedure for Moderate to Severe Periodontitis
SEATTLE, Oct. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc., the developer of the LANAP protocol and manufacturer of the PerioLase® MVP-7™ variable-pulsed Nd:YAG dental laser, announced at the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Annual Meeting in Seattle today that 49% of the AAP's active membership in the United States are now LANAP-trained clinicians.
The milestone reflects the expanding adoption of the minimally invasive alternative to traditional osseous surgery for patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease. With approximately half of active AAP members now trained in the LANAP protocol, more patients have access to the procedure that helps save hopeless teeth while reducing the discomfort and recovery time associated with conventional periodontal surgery.
"Reaching 49% of active AAP members represents a major milestone, but its real significance is what it means for patients," said Robert H. Gregg II, DDS, Founder, President and Chairman of the Board of Millennium Dental Technologies. "Our mission has always been about the patient—helping people save their natural teeth through a far less invasive treatment grounded in science. With more periodontists and general dentists trained in the LANAP protocol, patients have greater access to care they can feel comfortable accepting."
The announcement coincides with the 25-year anniversary of the PerioLase MVP-7™ and the LANAP protocol's 10-year anniversary of FDA clearance for true periodontal regeneration. Supported by extensive scientific and human histological research, including 651 positive patient outcomes published since 1998, the LANAP protocol is clinically proven to regenerate the attachment apparatus lost to periodontal disease, including new cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone on a previously diseased root surface.
Available only with the PerioLase MVP-7, the LANAP protocol uses laser energy to target harmful bacteria and diseased tissue while preserving healthy tissue. Treatment does not require scalpels or sutures and is a more comfortable experience for patients with less bleeding and faster recovery than traditional osseous surgery, helping patients return to their daily activities sooner.
Patient acceptance is another important part of the protocol's impact. In an independent survey of 512 LANAP-trained clinicians published in Decisions in Dentistry, 91.5% of respondents rated patient treatment acceptance more positively with the LANAP protocol than with traditional periodontal treatment modalities.
Each LANAP-trained clinician undergoes extensive training at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD), which combines didactic instruction with supervised treatment of live patients.
"Every LANAP-trained clinician goes through the IALD curriculum, including hands-on treatment of live patients under the supervision of certified instructors," said Dawn M. Gregg, DDS, Training Director of the IALD and Vice President of Operations at Millennium Dental Technologies. "Our program helps ensure doctors develop the clinical judgment and skills needed to deliver patient-centered care using the LANAP protocol and other laser procedures. As adoption grows, that commitment to education remains fundamental. That's one of the reasons we have been so successful in driving adoption among AAP members."
