Nadrich Accident Injury Lawyers, a California-based personal injury law firm, supports AB 1709, a bill which would prohibit social media platforms from providing addictive features to users under the age of 16.

"Features like endless scroll, autoplay, notifications and algorithmic feeds can encourage compulsive use, and stronger protections are needed for children and teens," said Jeffrey Nadrich, Founder and Managing Attorney of the firm.

"Social media companies should be held accountable when product design prioritizes engagement over the safety and well-being of young users," Nadrich added.

The bill would also require social media platforms to implement reasonable measures in order to make sure that users under the age of 16 aren't provided or offered addictive features.

In addition, the bill would impose civil penalties upon noncompliant platforms.

The bill states that internal social media company statements confirm that social media platforms are designed to encourage compulsive use, often without any regard for user well-being.

The bill states that adolescents are uniquely vulnerable to addictive design features, and that problematic use of social media is linked with behavioral and cognitive harms as well as anxiety, sleep disruption and depression.

According to the bill, experts have concluded that adolescents are harmed by social media at a scale sufficient to lead to population-level effects on well-being and mental health.
