Rocket Lab Corp. (Nasdaq: RKLB) achieved a major operational milestone by successfully launching the STP-S30 mission for the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command under the Department of War’s Space Test Program. The launch, dubbed “Don’t Be Such A Square,” lifted off from Rocket Lab’s Launch Complex 2 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Virginia and delivered four experimental DiskSat spacecraft into low Earth orbit.

Mission and Execution

Rocket Lab executed the STP-S30 mission five months ahead of schedule, demonstrating significant agility and responsiveness in meeting national security space access needs. The Electron launch vehicle deployed the four DiskSats into a roughly 550-kilometer orbit, where they will support advanced technology demonstrations related to maneuverability, orbit change capabilities, and other experimental objectives for U.S. defense and aerospace stakeholders.

This mission marks Electron’s 20th launch of 2025 and the company’s 78th mission overall, extending Rocket Lab’s record of frequent flight operations and reinforcing its role as a reliable provider of dedicated small-launch services for government and defense customers.

Strategic Importance

By accelerating STP-S30 and completing it well ahead of plan, Rocket Lab underscored its value proposition in the defense segment — offering rapid, cost-effective access to orbit that aligns with evolving military space strategy emphasizing flexibility and responsiveness. The Department of War’s Space Test Program aims to mature technologies critical to maintaining U.S. leadership in space operations, and the early deployment of these payloads highlights confidence in Rocket Lab’s operational cadence.

Outlook

The successful STP-S30 mission reinforces Rocket Lab’s standing as a key player in the expanding commercial space launch market — particularly within the defense and national security sector. With Electron continuing to fly frequently and plans underway for larger vehicles like Neutron, Rocket Lab is positioned to capture a broader share of emerging space launch demand that prioritizes flexibility, low launch cadence turnaround, and dedicated small-satellite delivery.
