NEW YORK, Aug. 03, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TruLegal, an award-winning global leader in AI-enabled legal talent solutions for modern legal teams, today announced the release of its midyear 2026 legal talent market review, “The Legal Profession at Halftime: What the First Six Months of 2026 Made Impossible to Ignore.”

Authored by TruLegal Founder and CEO Jared Coseglia, the review draws on TruLegal’s placement data, market observations and ongoing work with corporate legal departments, law firms, ALSPs and legal technology providers.

"AI has stopped being a conversation and started being a reckoning. The first half of 2026 confirmed what the data was always pointing toward. AI fluency is a premium skill in legal, and the premium is getting bigger."

The midyear review identifies eight major themes legal employers and professionals should be watching in the second half of 2026:

  1. AI fluency is becoming a compensation signal. TruLegal tracked the largest average increase in base compensation adjustments it has recorded for AI-enabled legal professionals, including a 14% increase for professionals actively leveraging AI technology daily.
  2. The legal talent market has split into two. Full-time hiring for AI-enabled legal roles remains slower and more complex, while contract and fractional hiring continues to move at a significantly faster pace.
  3. Legal operations is being unbundled. Legal departments are increasingly accessing specialized talent for defined projects, timelines and outcomes rather than waiting for one full-time hire to solve multiple problems.
  4. Legal operations is moving closer to the center of power. AI is giving legal operations leaders new ways to govern spending, enforce outside counsel expectations and connect legal work to measurable business outcomes.
  5. AI governance has become a talent gap. Organizations may have multiple stakeholders involved in AI conversations, but far fewer professionals who can operationalize AI governance inside real legal workflows.
  6. The legal interview has changed. Candidates are increasingly being asked how they are using AI in their current roles, even when many have not been given access to approved tools by their employers.
  7. Leadership itself is being rewritten. The review connects broader leadership turnover, Big Law movement, CLO role expansion and AI transformation to a larger capability shift at the top of legal and corporate organizations.
  8. The human side of AI transformation cannot be overlooked. The article closes with a call for leaders to recognize the people absorbing the taxation of constant reinvention and to invest efficiency gains back into the professionals creating them.

"The technology is powerful, and the human capacity to absorb change is finite. The future is not about choosing between people and tools. It is about making sure they advance together, and the leaders who hold both of those truths simultaneously are the ones who will define what sustainable growth looks like in this market."

The midyear review builds on a series of articles Coseglia has authored throughout 2026 on AI-enabled legal talent, compensation, legal operations, AI governance, interviewing, leadership and workforce transformation.

TruLegal will also share the article’s eight major themes through a LinkedIn midyear review series, with each post connecting the broader analysis to related market insights and previously published thought leadership.
